Essar Energy will continue to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive economy.

Essar Energy released its second Sustainability Report 'Building a Sustainable Energy Business'on July 30, 2013.

The report is Essar Energy's first Communication on Progress (COP) since its participation in UNGC early this year. The report also conforms to the following internationally accepted sustainability reporting frameworks in the oil and gas sector:

  • GRI G3.1 Guidelines
  • GRI Oil and Gas Sector Supplement
  • IPIECA / API / OGP Oil and Gas Industry Guidance on voluntary sustainability reporting
  • AccountAbility AA1000APS 2008

The information in the report covers 98% of the business by revenues in FY2013 and includes information on its four principal businesses namely Refining and Marketing, India; Refining and Marketing, UK; Exploration and Production and Power.

Like last year, the report has been released along with Essar Energy's Annual Report and provides actions and initiatives taken to improve its performance in relation to economic, social and environmental aspects.

During the period 1 April 2012 - 31 March 2013, the Company's achievements include the following:

Operational and economic

  • Essar Energy signed up to the United Nations Global Compact principles, setting out a clear framework for all our businesses to follow
  • Vadinar refinery optimisation completed four months early, taking capacity to 405,000 barrels per day
  • Power generation capacity increased to 3,910 megawatts from 1,600 megawatts
  • 1,517 employees trained in the UK Bribery Act, 2010


  • 13%  increase in employee training hours achieved by Power business group.
  • Increase in number of employees trained in health and safety by 124% at Vadinar refinery and 123% at CBM project, Raniganj.
  • 45% reduction in process safety event frequency rate achieved by Vadinar refinery
  • 326%  increase in number of contractors trained in health and safety at CBM project, Raniganj
  • Zero lost time injury frequency rate achieved by power plants at Hazira and Vadinar
  • Zero occupational disease rate achieved at all sites
  • Over 96,000 beneficiaries of our healthcare initiatives undertaken at various sites
  • Over 89,000 beneficiaries of  our community care initiatives undertaken at various sites
  • Over 17,900 beneficiaries of our educational initiatives undertaken at various sites


  • For the second successive year, Essar Oil was ranked the highest scorer in the energy sector by the Carbon Disclosure Project, India
  • 189%  increase in energy saved at Vadinar refinery
  • Low energy intensity of 0.45 tCO2e per MWh maintained by Essar Power, Hazira
  • 15% reduction in hazardous waste generation at Vadinar refinery


For the second year, the report has been externally assured by Ernst & Young. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has confirmed the report application level of A+
